Philippines Travel: Exploring Sagada On A Shoe-String Budget

December 21, 2009 by LostinManila

Urban dwellers would normally prefer to rove around the metropolis and explore every side-street in search for ideal refuge, more than traveling to remote provinces. However, there are more than 7,000 reasons to explore the parameters of this archipelago, taking into account its profuse land and marine resources and myriad sanctuaries.

Among the many interesting regions in the Philippines is the mountainous terrain and savanna in northern Luzon as inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Part of this region is Sagada. With a measly P2,500, a determined explorer can take a fulfilling jaunt to Sagada—a serene mountain community in Mt. Province. The adventurous travelers would customarily take the 10-hour bus ride from Manila to Banaue, Ifugao (via Solano, Nueva Ecija route) that costs not more than P300.

In Banaue, travelers have the option to take the day off and trek along the well-engineered Banaur Rice Terraces or take a jeepney ride to Bontoc and from there, one can catch a bus ride to a more tranquil region, Sagada in Mt. Province.

Sagada has economical lodging houses and hotels to spend the night over. For as low as P200, a traveler can avail of a bedroom for two and a well-scrubbed common bathroom with sufficient amount of water—for an overnight abode. Even though electricity and water are accessible in these highland regions, one of the guidelines in immersing to remote areas is not to expect for urban amenities.

However, the lack of adequate necessities is not an hindrance to any devoted backpacker. Indeed, the remarkable view of the mountains, sight of abundant natural resources, and exposure to mountain community are enough reasons to enjoy the trip.

Trekking along the narrow mountain trails of Batad and Bangaan Villages in Banaue is one of the many leisure options where panoramic views of the terraces can be enjoyed. To keep track of the trail, a number of villagers can be hired for hours as tour guides.

The trip is truly breathtaking and for an amateur trekker, the long hours of walk should not impede them to reach the other side of the trail. There are a number of brooks along the curvy mountain range that are guaranteed to quench one’s thirst during the hours of hike. Meanwhile, the awe-inspiring endpoint is an antidote to muscle pain.

Batad is comparable to realizing the pot of gold at the other end of the rainbow. It boasts of scenic and unspoiled layers of rice fields forming a colossal amphitheater, where native Ifugaos mostly dwell. The terraces is still a functional source of livelihood and personal sustenance for Ifugaos, except for some where irrigation systems have been destroyed through seepage, landslides, prolonged drought, erosion, and other inevitable natural calamities.

When you met your spouse: Stories of how married couples met

It was the French writer and statesman Victor Hugo who wrote how it feels to be entering upon old age. Feeling that your time is almost up. But then finding a new sense of relevance.

I am 66 and she is 24. That is a 42 year age difference. Ok? Or not ok?

She is Asian from the Philippines, and I will say very beautiful, though she disputes that. I am English in origin, residing near Melbourne, Australia, still in employment though my society would happily pension me off and no doubt consign me to a rest home.

She says I am handsome, though I have reservations about that.

We met for the first time. Yes, but I will show you what I mean. On Yahoo Messenger.

Holy smoke! Where would I be today without yahoo messneger online chat?

I was not looking for her. I had a conversation with an old friend, who suddenly vacated her chair to catch a bus. In the Philippine city of Tacloban on the island of Laete. On Yahoo Messenger that day. All my friend had to do before walking off, was to close her computer screen in the internet cafe. By sheer accident, she failed to do this, and a message appeared asking, “who are you?”.

Prompted by her question and a touch curious, I explained that I had a conversation “interruptus” situation.

That is how we first met. It was brief. She explained that she was in the process of contacting a guy she had met.

Why it developed from that shaky and unwanted start, I am not entirely sure. But when I got an image of her face, maybe from her Yahoo profile, something inside me decided hen and there that this was a lovely face.

So we met for the second time when I saw an image of her face.

Maybe the third time was when we spoke on the telephone and began exchanging text messages.

The fourth time we met was at 1.30 on the afternoon of 8 January 2007, when I arrived from Manila, and saw her standing waiting at the door of the small provincial airport, and I saw this delightful radiant young woman. Perhaps at that moment more than any other I felt that my advanced age rendered me incompatible.

The fifth time we met was at the resort on the island of Samar, around sundown, when Ai broke her ground rule of no sex for the first two days together. She said, “Do you want to make love?”

The sixth time we met was on a time and date unspecified, when our intense sexual activity caused her to conceive a child, now due in October.

the seventh time we will meet is on 3 April, when I am to meet her again, presently 10 weeks pregnant, in Manila, before flying next day down to Tacloban.

A daily diary of our meeting and our relationship is posted at jamesandaileen.blogspot.com

I shall add chapters to this story and welcome comments and questions.

I am not yet aware if I can post pictures here.

Travel experiences: Philippines – Part 1

Once you set foot on a foreign land, you’ll find how much you are missing from your home country. Me and my family have lived here in Canada for three years already. Unlike them, I was able to go home in the Philippines twice already. Although I traveled by myself in the airplane, the second time I went home as a “Balikbayan” as we call it, my family was with me already. It was a lot more fun. We went back home in the Philippines December 2007 for Christmas vacation. We keep telling everyone that no other country can beat Christmas in the Philippines.

I, myself arrived in the Manila International airport on Christmas Eve already. As we were driving on the way home I can already see the bright Christmas lights on the buildings in Manila and on the bay. When we got home, the whole family was there and there under our big Christmas tree lies the gifts that I couldn’t wait to open. There in the long table lie the foods for “Noche Buena” not to mention my favourite Christmas ham. After having dinner and telling stories I was granted my wish to open the gifts whether it’s mine or not.

The next day we went to the church for the Christmas day mass. After the mass we went shopping not to mention that the malls were all crowded since many people wanted to go out to dine and shop on that day. Shopping really is one of the best things when visiting the Philippines. The Philippines have a lot of shopping malls to choose from, whether you want high class or cheap finds you will find it there.

The visit would not be complete without seeing my crazy friends whom I miss so much. I went to meet my friends for a stroll in the mall and dinner. Ahhh the chit-chats and never ending gossips about old friends and old flames. After dinner over Yellow Cab’s Manhattan Meat lovers’ pizza, we then headed to Time Zone for some arcade games and for some karaoke. Filipinos loves singing so most get-togethers have karaoke sessions where you can sing you heart out. Nothing beats the company of your true friends. Every second is worth spending with them. I felt like no matter how far we may have been for the past year, nothing much has changed. They were still the same good old friends I have, even better.

The last thing I needed to say that my trip to the Philippines was worth the while was to go out of town to a beach resort. We went to Pangasinan City and went swimming on one of their best quit white sand beaches in Puerto Del Sol resort. The sunset and sunrise by the beach was just plain breath-taking. After the trip to the beach, we couldn’t help it and needed one more swimming trip. We checked in at the Hyatt hotel in Manila and enjoyed their Jacuzzi and sauna there.

Overall I have to say the visit was one of the best travel experiences in my life. The best thing about it was that I was able to enjoy every moment of my short visit with my friends and family. I am definitely looking forward to my next visit.

Two Way Of The Most Advantages Of Crock-Pot Cooking

December 20, 2009 by LostinManila

The two main advantages of crock-pot cooking are that they:

* Save Time

* Save Money

Time-Saver

Crock-pot cooking for me is synonymous with time-saver. We each have different phases of life and this season is definitely my crock-pot phase — maybe out of desperation. No matter what stage we’re in though, crock-pot cooking can always be a benefit.

Here’s a scenario: It’s five o’clock and you’ve finally finished helping with the homework with two of your children, and then your third child returns from piano — ready to start homework — and has a question about algebra. Soccer practice starts in exactly one hour. And not to mention that you’ve got three loads of laundry spewed across your bed and ready to be folded. The phone rings — a reminder to bring snacks to soccer practice, it’s your turn. The kids are hungry; hubby will be home in thirty minutes. Do you make that call? For more details visit to www.cajuns-recipes.com. Honey, could you bring home in & out again, the usual?” Or do you simply whip up a salad to go with your chicken cacciatore that’s been cooking slowly and succulently in your crock-pot all day. This truly is my life and I’m working towards the latter scenario becoming a more prevalent one.

Perhaps you remember crock-pots back when you were a kid — along with Barry Manila, mood rings, and banana seats — all popular in the 1970’s. Crock-pots are now making a comeback, and for Vegas supporters, so is Barry Manila. The essential ingredient here is not that we’re all going retro but rather that life is busy and we’re seeking time-management helps that work. Five o’clock can be the busiest, so preparing food the night before and putting it in containers overnight or chopping and dicing earlier in the day can be the most convenient and healthy solution.

Money-Saver

This type of cooking saves money on many levels. As I mentioned earlier, if you’re organized and have your pizza in a pot cooking all day — you won’t be tempted to call Dominos at five pm. Eating out does get expensive, especially for an entire family and if it becomes a habit. Cooking in the crock is a longer process than in the oven or on the grill and because of these meats is really tender, even with cheaper cuts of meat. Therefore it really has the potential of reducing our grocery bills.

In the summertime it’s hot — especially where I’m living in the desert — so any excuse not to heat up the house is a good one. Energy bills are definitely affected. To know more logon to www.atkins-diets-recipes.com. There are numerous crock-pot cookbooks out there with healthy and tasty family-friendly recipes. Incorporating crock pots back into our lives can be one of the first and simplest of many steps in achieving organization and balance in our lives.

The Wolf

Look, Sheila

this is the key to my extra condo

and this is the key to my BMW

they are there waiting for you

at your pleasure.

This angmo here works under me

I’m his boss

How many people in this city

can have angmos as their subordinates?

Though I’m limping

I can give you the best in this world

You don’t have to serve coffee again

You don’t have to look at

the unfriendly faces of these customers.

Why can’t you just accept it ?

Opportunity never knock twice

Please think it over

I shall give you two days

to decide

After which I shall bring in

a Philippino girl from Manila.

and I shall never come to this

cafeteria again.

Dumaguete City; City of Gentle People

The plane lands, you get out and you notice the beautiful landscape of the Cuernos de Negros, the so-called horns of Negros, while at the same time enjoying the ocean breeze coming from the Tañon Straight. You have landed in Dumaguete City and now it is time for us to show you what Dumaguete City has to offer for you.

Once you leave the airport, you will notice hundreds of vehicles assembled on the roads and you will notice that Dumaguete City is the city of the most motorcycles in the world. You now have many different choices when it comes to hotels, and pension houses that you want to stay in. Take the next tricycle, since there barely are taxis in Dumaguete City, and head to the classy Coco Grande, which is one of the most stylish and most pricy hotels in the city. Coco Grande is a Spanish inspired building in which you can also find services such as adventure tours and spas.

Another hotel you may want to visit is the Bethel Guest house. This guest house is held in a simple style, but it is located at the famous Dumaguete Boulevard which gives you a view on the sea. There are also other hotels such as Hotel Palwa and Ok Pensionne, if you are looking for something more affordable. Dumaguete City’s Boulevard is the ultimate landmark in the city because it survived decades, especially the war decade and is still standing today. Renovation work on the Boulevard is being done annually and thus the landscape and the monuments are still being protected. The Boulevard houses entertainers such as singers and dancers, and there are morning work-outs and worships that are being held daily at the Boulevard. Do not forget to stop by the Tempura vendors who will not only sell you fried goodies, but also Filipino Balut eggs.

Dumaguete City is a University town and perfect for students who want to study in a quiet environment with a quality education. There are four Universities that are currently located in Dumaguete City; Catholic St. Paul University, Foundation University, Negros Oriental State University, and famous Silliman University. Silliman University also known as SU is known word-wide and Silliman currently prides themselves of having a top Allied Health Science and Nursing education that will open doors for students who want to work abroad.

Dumaguete City is not only the city of gentle people and the city of Universities, but Dumaguete also has great holidays and so-called fiestas where people can relax, enjoy and most importantly taste the delicious food that will be served. One of the annual events in Dumaguete City is the Dumaguete City Fiesta which is being held every November 24. This even is packed with parades, special food displays and the Miss Dumaguete Pageant in which young ladies from Dumaguete compete for the coveted crown.

Another big event is the annual Buglasan Celebration. In this celebration, each city, town and municipality from Negros Oriental comes together in Dumaguete City to display their local foods and talents. This event is being celebrated in a little town specially built for Buglasan, called Sidlakan Negros. During the Buglasan, you will see many variety shows sponsored by the government, such as International student variety shows, band contests and singing contests.

Even though Dumaguete City seems to be a rather small city in Negros Oriental, it is full of surprises, festivals and not to forget good food. Visit this little great city by taking domestic flights from Manila or bus and boat trips from the other surrounding cities and provinces.

Is Apples new MacBook Air worth the price?

December 19, 2009 by LostinManila

It is the slimmest of all, the envy of most, and the boast of its creators. Can you guess its name? No, it is not seven of nine on the Star Trek Voyager series; it is the new Apple MacBook Air Notebook. You’ve all seen the advertisement on television and on the Internet. It’s so slim it slides comfortably into a legal sized manila envelope.

Of course, its ultra thin, sleek and shiny and weighs only three pounds. It can hitch a ride in a backpack, shoulder bag or briefcase. Moreover, it’s environment friendly. No, it does not have friendly talks with the environment. However, when it outlives its usefulness, you can toss it into the yard or burn it without harming the Ozone layer or other people’s health. Thus far, the MacBook Air is the only computer made with environment safety in mind.

And it’s all in the realm of competitive technology. No other term seems more apt, especially, when each year a newer version of the same gizmo bombards the public. Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corporation are two of the strongest technology contenders that butt heads to stay ahead of the computer and gizmo rivalry. This time, Apple may have nicked Microsoft’s chip with the MacBook Air. It’s a piece of modern technology devout Mac lovers would cherish.

But is slim really better?

At US $1799.00, the MacBook Air is equipped with a mobile 13.3-inch screen, 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4 MB and 80 GB. At the front, neatly embedded in its slim contour is a built-in isight camera. It is .16 by .76 in height, offers a battery life of up to five hours and is has wireless feature. In addition, the delicate MacBook Air has a micro-DVI, USB 2.0 port, an audio port and a remote disk feature, all artistically concealed in another port within the cover. In comparison to other notebooks, it’s faster and can zip from one window to another faster than one can exhale. Illuminated keys make it easy to work in poor lighting situations. Many of its parts are recyclable and one does not need a bulky laptop bag to take it to the park.

So how does this lightweight champ stand up to other cheaper models? And what are its weaknesses?

The MacBook Air is not sold fully loaded. It contains many features as a Windows PC and you would need to purchase additional software and accessories to give it some more spunk.

Its wireless connection limits one’s ability to surf the internet. The MacBook Air is built for wireless only. In the absence of a Wi-Fi network or a Starbuck’s cafe, there would be no internet access. And it is not equipped with a port for an Ethernet cable to connect to an external router or cable/modem, which can make one feel like he/she is lugging around a one-legged cripple.

Also noticeable is the absence of an Optical Disk Drive, a computer’s peripheral device that stores data on optical disks. It utilises electromagnetic waves to read or write data. And its ability to burn CDs or DVDs is limited by its single USB port and the absence of a FireWire port.

The MacBook Air’s most appealing features are its weight and slimness. But is it really worth spending a few hundred dollars more for less weight? You be the judge.

Law Offices Professional Image And Marketing

Face it. Financial bottom lines are affected by the fact we live in a world that judges a book by its cover. Pretty singers sell more records, court cases rank higher in the news if the person is attractive, and politicians are elected based on their image as much any other factor. Its not right, but this issue of image is one that you have to live with and learn to work with.Appearance Your physical persona and the way present yourself.Information Accuracy and honesty; the keys to presenting the data gathered during a case.Education The continual improvement to your professional knowledge base.- Always dress in a professional manner. For men and women both, the attire should be business professional, which for men means suit and tie whenever possible, and for the ladies, business suits, nice skirt and blouse, or dresses. If you look unkempt or second rate the client will wonder how youll represent them while working their case.- Keep jewelry at a minimum. Jewelry should follow the rule on colognes. Its best to smell of nothing than to overpower with the wrong thing. A general jewelry guideline is no more than 2 rings per hand, no more than 2 thin necklaces, and either post or small-ring earrings. And… you guessed it, visible exotic piercings or tattoos are out if youre going to be taken seriously by the legal community. The Professional Image Dress website at http://www.professionalimagedress.com has some good articles and checklists. Also, youll find some good books and magazines on business and professional image at your local library.- Business cards are a must. Make them distinctive, but with minimal content. Let your website or brochure carry the heavy content.- For stationery, choose quality paper and have your letterhead and envelopes, as well as your contracts, professionally produced by the same people who do your business cards. Make sure their color themes match. Your local print shop or office supply store should have everything you need. If theres any one place you want to spend a little money, this is near the top of the list.- Stay away from blank notepads and manila folders. Theyll both get too messy too soon and not only will that make you look unprofessional and disorganized, but blank notepads make you look unprepared, and lost or disorganized notes lead to inaccurate reports and invoices. Invest a little time and/or money into buying or developing a comprehensive set of forms or an organizer system to use while assembling your case.- Rule one is, always has been, and always will be, Use a good case management system. Make sure everyone working for you uses the same system, and that your standards of accuracy start at the beginning, and continues through the whole case and through any follow-up you may ever have with that client. Then treat all of your other clients the same way.- With any kind of information transfer, the key word in todays legal climate is PRIVACY! Reassure your clients in your contract, and in your final report that your relationship with them is as private as the law allows, and everything you do in connection with their case, before, during, or after the fact, will remain confidential. Loose lips not only sink ships, they destroy good client relationships.- When you answer the phone, do so cheerfully and actually smile. You can tell when someones not happy to be on the phone and so can others. This phone call might be your first contact with the next big client, so make it count.- If voice mail is your only option, make the best of it. First, be smiling and cheerful when you record the message. Second, have the message convey your high standards. Say something like As were extremely devoted to all our clients, were probably working a case on their behalf right now. However, YOU are just as important to us so please leave us your name and number and well get back to you within the hour. Then, if you say youll be back to them within the hour, actually do it. Prompt personal attention is a major plus in any business.- The written word should follow the same rule. Make sure your business cards, letterhead, brochures, reports, invoices, and all other written documents use correct spelling and proper grammar. Though your client may be enamoured enough with your abilities as a legal professional to overlook a minor grammatical error, you never know who else of importance might see your report or correspondence.- Many states require continuing education. If your state does, you should publish this fact in your firms literature. If your state does not require CEU, you should still take it upon yourself to keep your own training updated and make that fact a prominent component of your marketing materials.- Many online communication forums are professionally dedicated and will provide educational information and opportunities through either on-site or on-line courses, or through the hints, tips, and suggestions offered by members. One good online communication forum is found through Yahoo Groups at http://www.yahoogroups.com. The free registration is easy to complete, and all youll need to do is search through the groups using the phrase private investigator or other keywords associated with your specialty. As you attend some of these educational functions, take the opportunity to look around you and either further your own education on this issue of appearance by studying your colleagues, or help improve the way they represent you by helping educate them as to the benefits of a more professional image.
